Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - December 28, 2024
Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from You.”
“Other seasons are for getting ahead; this one is for enjoying where you are.” That was an ad for Southern Comfort (sounds like some kind of blanket, doesn’t it?*) The last phrase is certainly true--enjoying where you are--not only during Christmastide but any time. All the seasons of the Christian year plead with us to give love now, to use our God-given talents, to be present where we are now. To realize how irreplaceable, how unrepeatable, this dinner, this paper, this person, this laughter, this time together is. Every season, really, tells us: write that letter today; call that friend this evening; begin that exercise program this morning.
We're not talking about frantic, frenzied “grabbing the gusto,” but rather of dignifying and honoring everyone, every event and every moment with attention, care, reverence -- now. On a smaller scale, it's like the commitment we give to a husband or wife, which we hope for and expect in a marriage. Instead of looking over our shoulder continually for some fairy tale person, we give this person our undivided and loving attention. So, too, instead of spending couch-potato hours on remote, media celebrities, why not discover the abilities, skills, beauty of the people with whom we actually live and work? Enjoy, rather more, live where you are.
Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
