Fr. Don's Daily Reflection - February 20, 2025
Psalm 62: “In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from You.”
The poet Emily Dickinson wrote that there were two biblical injunctions she had never broken. “Look at the birds of the air” and “Look at the flowers of the field” (Luke 12:22-31). Possibly if we too took them as commands, we'd practice more of the carefree trust and confidence our Lord points to in these words. In them he rebukes our seriousness and worry about work, about getting ahead, acquiring things, position, power. His words address not only the wealthy who wear themselves out getting and safeguarding things but also those with little who can be eaten up with desire for more.
If we could take these words more to heart, they could free us from much that weighs us down. Our desires for position, prestige, power, recognition, influence, our concern not to be underrated, all this would take a back seat to trust in God's care and the value God gives us. Like most poetic words, these are better left to be read and repeated as they are. “Which of you by worrying can add a moment to your life span? Learn a lesson from the wildflowers. If God can clothe in such splendor the grass of the field, will He not provide much more for you, O, weak in faith!”
Psalm 27: “I believe I shall see the Lord’s goodness / in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong; / be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!”
